CBSE Class IX Scheme of Studies 2026-27: Key Changes
Students heading into Class IX next session have a clearer picture now. CBSE has spelt out the Scheme of Studies for Class IX 2026-27, and it carries two big shifts: a few new curricular areas are being dropped for this batch, and every student must pick a vocational subject, with a real choice between an internally assessed option and one that brings a Board exam in Class X.
The rules apply to students studying in Class IX during 2026-27 who move up to Class X in 2027-28. The current Class X (2026-27) batch is not affected. For them, the old scheme continues.
What changes in the CBSE Class IX Scheme of Studies 2026-27
The Board has decided that certain newer areas will stay out of the curriculum for this specific batch. These are:
- The subject Individuals in Society in Class IX (2026-27)
- The Modules of CT & AI in Class IX (2026-27)
- The subject Environmental Education in Class X (2027-28)
CBSE says this is to align the introduction of the inter-disciplinary curricular area with the actual implementation schedule.
So for this batch, students study nine subjects: Language R1, Language R2, Mathematics, Science, Social Science, Language R3, Art Education, Physical Education & Well-being, and Vocational Education (Skill Education). On top of these, a student can take one Optional Subject from a list of 57. One catch worth noting: if a language is chosen as the Optional Subject, it must be different from the languages taken as R1, R2 and R3.
Vocational Education: Kaushal Vikas or a Skill Subject
Vocational Education stays compulsory. Here the student decides between two routes:
| Option | How it is assessed |
|---|---|
| Kaushal Vikas | School-based Internal Assessment only |
| Any one of the 22 Skill Subjects | Board Examination in Class X (2027-28) |
Pick Kaushal Vikas and you are assessed internally. Schools award both marks and grades, and issue their own certificate to students who score at least 33%. There is no Board exam for it in Class X.
Pick a Skill Subject instead, and you sit the Board Examination in that subject in Class X. The marks and grades show up on the Board marksheet, and an NSQF certificate is awarded on passing.
The 22 Skill Subjects include Retail (401), Information Technology (402), Artificial Intelligence (417), Data Science (419), Beauty & Wellness (407), Agriculture (408), Marketing & Sales (412) and Design Thinking and Innovation (422), among others.
Which subjects carry a Board exam in Class X 2027-28
Five subjects always have a Board exam: Language R1, Language R2, Mathematics, Science and Social Science. Optional Mathematics Advanced, Optional Science Advanced, the Optional Subject and a chosen Skill Subject carry a Board exam only if opted for. Language R3, Art Education and Physical Education & Well-being are assessed through school-based internal assessment.
To pass Class X, a student needs at least 33% in each of the five Board-assessed subjects, counting Internal Assessment and Board Examination together.
