What JEE Main is for
JEE (Main) has two papers. Paper 1 is for admission to undergraduate engineering programmes (B.E./B.Tech) at NITs, IIITs, other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions and participating state-funded institutions. It also works as the eligibility test for JEE (Advanced), the gateway to the IITs. Paper 2 covers B.Arch and B.Planning courses.
The exam will be held in 13 languages: English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu.
Exam pattern and timing
Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech) has 75 questions across Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, 25 each, and runs for 3 hours. Paper 2A (B.Arch) carries 77 questions and Paper 2B (B.Planning) carries 100 questions.
- For each subject in Paper 1 and Part-I of Paper 2, Section A holds Multiple-Choice Questions and Section B holds questions answered as a numerical value.
- There is negative marking in both Section A and Section B.
- Papers run in two shifts: 09:00 A.M. to 12:00 Noon (IST) and 03:00 P.M. to 06:00 P.M. (IST). The B.Arch and B.Planning combined paper runs 3 hours 30 minutes.
- The Drawing Test (Part-III) of Paper 2A is done offline on an A4 sheet; the rest is Computer Based Test (CBT) mode.
One warning from NTA: file only a single application. Candidates who submit more than one form face action even at a later stage. Students should also give their own or their parent’s email and mobile number, since all updates come by email and SMS.
Apply only through https://jeemain.nta.nic.in/. For full details on eligibility and scheme, check the Information Bulletin of JEE (Main) 2027 on the same website. The city of examination will be announced on 30 December 2026, so keep an eye on the portal after submitting your form.
