CBSE Schools to Celebrate Reading Day, Reading Week and Reading Month from June 19

Reading Day 2020

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) issued a circular (Acad- 42/2020) dated 16/6/2020 encouraging it's affiliated schools to celebrate Reading Day, Reading Week and Reading Month beginning from June 19. The board asked the schools to organize activities with an increased focus on promoting technology-enabled reading.

Honouring the father of the Library Movement, the late P.N. Panicker, 19th June is being celebrated as Reading Day and the following week as the Reading Week. Started as a Reading Day Celebration on 19th June 1996, it has become a mass movement to promote the culture of reading.

On 19th June 2017, Hon’ble Prime Minister launched the 22nd National Reading Month Celebrations and gave a clarion call to propagate the message of ‘Read and Grow’ among all the citizens of the country by 2022.

The 25th National Reading will be celebrated on 19th June 2020, the following week as Reading Week and Reading Month will be celebrated from 19th June to 18th July 2020. In the light of COVID-19 pandemic, the P.N. Panicker Foundation has initiated and designed different online reading-related activities.

Some of the activities that the P.N. Panicker Foundation is conducting this year are:

  • Digital Reading Pledge
  • Webinars on Importance of Reading, Digital Library and Intellectual Property Rights, etc.
  • Reading Competitions for School Students (Quiz, Open Art, Essay Writing)
  • Reading Competitions for College Students (Quiz, Open Art, Debate)
  • Reading Competitions for Teachers/ Faculty Members (Quiz, Video Book)
  • Reading Competitions for Librarians (Quiz, Video Book)

For all the quizzes, eCertificate of Participation will be offered to all the participants scoring above 40% mark and the first and second prizes will be awarded according to the regions of India or state-wise depending on the entries.
