CBSE Geospatial Technology, Food Production, Mass Media Studies and Media Production

The Central Board of Secondary Education ( CBSE) is introducing new vocational courses -geospatial technology, food production (hospitality and tourism), food and beverage services (hospitality and tourism), mass media studies and media production - for classes XI and XII from 2011-12 session. The Board had started the course last year in a few schools as a pilot run. As per a circular issued by CBSE on February 3, these courses received an overwhelming response due to which CBSE decided to give an option to all its affiliated schools to start these courses.

According to CBSE, these vocational courses would help develop employability skills among students at the senior secondary level and also open various career options for them. "Demand for geospatial practices has skyrocketed over the past few years. This needs huge trained manpower. This course offers an opportunity for the students to understand the basics of geospatial technology dealing with mapping and applications. Students obtain insight into geospatial database concepts, creating and implementing databases, GIS theory, supported by extensive practical exercises, spatial analysis (network and surface operations) and developing geospatial practices skills," the circular mentioned. Schools interested in introducing these new courses are required to intimate the Board by March 5.
