The annual intake of students for various courses in AIIMS would increase by 182 following the implementation of 27 per cent reservation for OBCs in the prestigious institute.

A meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, today gave its nod for increasing the seats for admission of students in AIIMS as recommended by the Oversight Committee.

"After implementation of reservation for OBCs in the institute, the annual intake in various undergraduate, postgraduate and paramedical courses will increase by 182," an official statement said.

Implementation of reservation for OBCs will not only increase intake capacity of AIIMS but also facilitate better health care delivery system, it said, adding that total number of seats will increase without altering the existing number of unreserved seats.

The CCEA also approved a proposal of the Health Ministry to access global grant of Rs 609.91 crore to scale up counselling and testing, care and support facility for people suffering from AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria in India.

According to official release, about 2.6 crore people have been counselled and tested across the country via the Integrated Counselling and Testing Centres (ICTCs) in the last five years.

During the same period, about 164.9 lakh pregnant women have received HIV prevention counselling and testing.

Similarly, of 89,663 HIV positive pregnant women, 45,982 women and their babies have received treatment under the Prevention of Parent to Child Transmission of HIV programme.

Also, 95,000 HIV infected TB patients have been diagnosed across the country and linked with treatment facilities, the statement said.
