The Karnataka Government, which has decided to expand its higher education sector, is planning to open more 'multi-discipline' universities that offer subjects across various streams, Higher Education Minister V S Acharya said today.

Speaking to reporters after presiding over the meeting of the Karnataka State Council for Higher Education, for which he is the Chairman, he said the state had ensured implementation of several reforms in higher education. The number of varsities, including engineering, medicine, music, Kannada, focklore and women specific universities was adequate.

''Now we want more multi-discipline universities where the youth are offered courses in different streams,'' he said. He said the government had decided to make several changes in PhD programmes as per the UGC norms. It had been made mandatory that a six month duration course should be completed by a student aspiring to take up research work. He or she should submit the thesis between three to five years and no extension would be given beyond five years.

A research candidate should publish atleast two research papers in journals of repute before submitting his thesis, Acharya said. He said as per the report of N R Shetty Committee which went into the gamut of reforms on higher education reforms, the government had decided to focus on improvement in gross enrolment ratio in colleges and post graduate courses. It was also thinking of setting up of a Karnataka State University Tribunal.

The committee had also recommended more teachers' training and orientation programmes, appointing a pro-vice chancellor for every 150 colleges and on more autonomy to the reputed colleges and institutions. The recommendations of the report would be posted on the websites of all the universities in the state and public and expert opinions would be elicited, he said.

He said the government would bring uniformity in admissions to all degree and PG courses and eligibility criteria. The maximum duration for the student to clear a three year old degree had been fixed at six years.
