MHRD or Ministry of Human Resource Development was formerly known as Ministry of Education. This is the apex body responsible for the development of human resources in India and has basically two departments under it. The first one is the Department of School Education and Literacy and the second one is the Department of Higher Education. The former department deals with primary, secondary and higher education along with adult education and literacy. The latter one deals with university education, technical education and scholarships.

Established in the year 1985, MHRD is responsible for addressing the issues of the private and the public education sector. The body is responsible for writing policies, schemes, programmes and legislations in coordination with various ministries. All of these are aimed at looking after the betterment of the education and literacy of people across all levels. MHRD is responsible for providing education as well as access to education to children belonging to every social segment, at least up to 14 years of age.

The School Education and Literacy Department also looks after improving the quality of education as well as improving the levels of education among the children. Various child programmes like Mid Day Meal Scheme and Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan are under the body.
