I studied Grades 11 and 12 commerce at Jain International School (batch 2019) where I initially chose Mathematics because I genuinely wanted to study it. However, within the very first week, the school management strongly emphasised how difficult the subject was and suggested that students who were not strong performers should move to PE instead. I was an average student at the time, and I was also young and lacking confidence, so when the school suggested that I switch, I did. Looking back, this is something I deeply regret. I don’t believe that struggling with a subject should mean being discouraged from studying it. Students should be given the opportunity, support and foundation to improve rather than being made to feel that a difficult subject is simply not meant for them. Years later, I am now pursuing an MSc in Applied Economics, a programme that is heavily mathematical. It has made me realise how valuable the mathematical foundation I could have developed in school would have been. I cannot help but feel that I missed that opportunity partly because I was discouraged from pursuing Mathematics when I was younger. I take responsibility for not having had the confidence to push back at the time, but I also believe schools have a responsibility to encourage students rather than make decisions based primarily on their performance at that particular moment. Being weak at something does not mean a student does not have the right to learn it. I hope the school has changed its approach since then and now encourages students who struggle with Mathematics to receive additional support rather than simply steering them away from the subject.:::
