PROMOTING READING FOR PLEASURE!
Reading opens doors to a world of adventure, culture, diversity and knowledge, and is an activity vital to the development of curiosity and a love of learning. With computer- generated games, electronic devices and programmes battling for children’s attention, Educators and Parents need to give children every opportunity to explore the wonders of the written word. Interestingly, studies have found that reading for pleasure is important to a child’s development, more than any other form of reading as is being done in classrooms. There is good evidence to suggest that young people who read for pleasure daily perform better in all areas of the school curriculum than those who never do. Through reading, they are learning life skills for their higher studies, and later, the workplace.
The Central Board of Secondary Education, Delhi, is committed to improving students’ scholastic and coscholastic achievement levels and, a step in this direction is promoting the importance of reading books. Here, teachers, school librarians and parents should motivate children to enjoy reading, and enable them to read a wide range of good quality literature.
The National Book Trust, publishes books in English , Hindi and regional languages that are age-appropriate, competitively priced and made readily available through the Book Fairs and exhibitions. These events also give teachers, librarians and children an opportunity for interaction with authors, publishers and book-sellers, besides students’ presentations, conducted throughout the country.
In order to encourage students to read more books and read them for pleasure, all heads of affiliated schools are requested to ensure that the information about the New Delhi World Book Fair is widely disseminated among all their stakeholders. Schools located in and around Delhi/NCR may make necessary arrangements for their students to visit the Book Fair.
