The functions of the RCI include the regulation and monitoring of services given to persons with disabilities, standardisation of syllabi. It also maintains a record of all the qualified personnel and professionals who are working in the field of rehab and special education, a part of which is the granting of accreditation for healthcare workers like audiologists, prosthetists, counsellor, psychologists and teachers. Their records are maintained in the Central Rehabilitation register.

The RCI accept candidates for two-year diploma level courses in Special Education (HI/MR/VI/ASD/CP/MD/DB) via the All India Online Aptitude Test (AIOAT) into approximately 450 recognised institutions.

Rehabilitation of all kinds, whether mental, psychological or physical, is an integral part of the treatment process for all patients, and the RCI has been the driving force leading to the improvement of the rehabilitation services provided in our country.
