It is a statutory body in the Government of India. It is also called as Central Council constituted under the pharmacy act 1948. The Council was first established on 4th March, in the year 1948. Central Government constitutes it for every five years the base of this Institute lies in New Delhi. It is linked to the Ministry of Health Services and Family Welfare. PCI objectives are regulating pharmacy education in the country, in order to get registered as a pharmacist, under the pharmacy act. They also have the regulation of the profession and the practice of Pharmacy.
This Council is responsible for describing the syllabus, norms for the institution, and regulations for diploma courses in pharmacy. It also undertakes registrations of a pharmacist.PIC holds the gear for both the pharmacy industry and pharmacy education. Usually, pharmacy education of the country is available in three distinct stages
- Diploma
- Graduate Degree and
- Postgraduate
Some institutes are providing Research and Post-Doctoral Research as well. All the Institutions providing pharmacy education in the country need to get registered with the Pharmacy Council of India. This Council keeps a close vigil over the infrastructure, teaching and the training quality of Institutions and regularly checks on them.
