Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti is for gifted students in India. It is a system of alternate schools. Navodaya Samiti runs these schools, and it is an autonomous organization under the Department of School Education and Literacy, Government of India. This system is a unique experiment unparalleled in the annals of school education, in India and elsewhere.

It is very significant for selecting talented children from rural areas under the target group and attempting to provide them with quality education with boarding facilities. In these boarding schools, the budget for education and other activities is free of cost during their seven years of stay. This exists all over India, except in Tamil Nadu because more anti-Hindi moments were widespread there during past times.

There are approximately 598 institutes throughout India. This idea belongs to our former Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi. National policy on education 1986 got the idea and the concept of opening a center in every district of India aiming to provide excellence in studies along with Social Justice. To get admission to the schools, they have to undergo an entrance exam, which is designed based on CBSE syllabus. The test is being conducted in three phases depending on the session structure, in the specific state or union territory.
