NLM National Literacy Mission

Follow

Government of India set the National Literacy Mission (NLM), on 5th May 1988. The main aim of this mission is to eradicate illiteracy of the country. This can be done by imparting functional literacy to nonliterates. The first campaign was initiated by the NLM, in the Kottayam city of Kerala. This is being followed by the Ernakulam District, which belongs to the same state.NLM has two flagship programs, and they are Total Literacy programs and Post Literacy programs.

These programs give shape to the aims of the organization. On 30th September 1999 revitalization of NLM has taken place combining these two programs into a single Literacy Campaigns an Operation Restoration' program. The main targets for this program are people between 15 and 35 years of age Total Literacy Campaigns were initiated by the NLM, and they achieved outstanding recognition too.

The establishment of NLM has taken place not only to make everybody self-dependant on the 3 R’s (Reading, Writing, Arithmetic) but also for making them aware about the development issues which affect the society.NLM is working under the guidance of the National Literacy Mission Authority, which is an independent wing in the Ministry of Human Resources and Development.
