India has one of the vast and diverse education systems. With the emergence of new streams and faculties, privatization and increased autonomy have made higher education accessible to all. It raised concerns regarding the quality and relevance of education delivered. This resulted in the birth of the NAAC on the recommendations of the National Policy in Education and strategic plans formulated by the Programme of Action (POA- 1992) for addressing deteriorating quality of education. Full form of NAAC is known as National Assessment and Accreditation Council. NAAC is an educational body that assesses and accredits other higher educational institution in India. It was established in 1994 as an autonomous organization of the University Grants Commission (UGC) for imbibing quality in the functions of Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs).
The NAAC operates through Executive Committee and General Council which comprises of a policy maker, administrators and senior academicians from different sections of India’s higher education system. The chairperson of the University Grants Commission (UGC) is president of the General Council (NAAC) who nominates the eminent academician as chairperson of the Executive Committee. NAAC director is administrative and academic head and also member-secretary of UG and EC bodies. Besides statutory bodies, NAAC is also guided by consultative and advisory committees from time to time. Head Quarters of NAAC is located in Bengaluru, Karnataka India.
