Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar is an autonomous educational institute that was established by the Government of Odisha in the year 1972. The Institute of Physics is registered under the societies Registration Act 1860. This Institute is funded by the Department of Atomic Energy and Government of Odisha. Furthermore, the Institute of Physics (IOP) also receives funds from government organizations like the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) for financing specific research projects. Institute of Physics offers courses like Pre-Doctoral and Doctoral Programs to its students.

The Pre-Doctoral program focuses on delivering broad-based knowledge in research methodology and advanced physics. Admission to this course is given on the basis of the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST) and oral exam. These IOP courses are conducted from August to June every year, where students are awarded a Diploma in Advanced Physics by the Institute on successful completion of the term. On completing the Pre-Doctoral program, students become eligible for the Doctoral Program, where they conduct research under the guidance of faculty members. On successful completion of the program, the Ph.D. degree is awarded by the Homi Bhabha National Institute which falls under the Department of Atomic Energy. Apart from courses mentioned above, IOP summer internships or short-term visitor program are conducted by the Institute to carry research work.
