Established in the year 1977, Indian Council of Philosophical Research functions under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. It is an autonomous organization which aims at bringing back the glory of Indian philosophy to its original form. It provides the required impetus to promote new philosophical thinking through intensive research programs.
The main objectives of the organization are developing the programs to collate the important achievements of the Indian philosophers and publishing a series of books focussing on the same. They deal with the problems of epistemology, ethics, ontology, political and social philosophy and Indian spirituality and propagate the works of the Indian philosophers on these subjects. They are also responsible for developing schemes for workshops, seminars and refresher courses which promote very high level research by the philosophers of India. They initiate special programs which help in developing the teaching-learning materials, making the study of philosophy more interesting and replete with information.
The main functions include initiating special programs for young scholars of the country to have a common meeting platform for not only studying philosophy but also establishing various kinds of fellowship schemes. The body is also responsible for maintaining relationships with various organizations of philosophy in India.
