Indian Council of Historical Research is an autonomous body, established under the Societies Registration Act, in the year 1972. The basic objective of setting up this organization is to propagate and disseminate the importance of history as a subject, by bringing all the historians together. The body is one of the best platforms to exchange views between historians and work for the development of the subject in domestic as well as international forums.

The body is responsible for providing a national direction to a scientific and objective analysis of history along with sensible interpretation and depiction of history. It also promotes, coordinates and accelerates every kind of research work in history, specially emphasizing on those areas which are still not under much purview. One of the very important functions that the body performs is promoting and coordinating a well balanced distribution of the research work over every aspect related to history.

Gaining support and recognition for historical research from all the concerned areas and propagation of the information collected to appropriate areas, is a much anticipated function on their part.The Council is responsible for providing financial assistance and fellowships to young teachers and senior scholars in the colleges, registered research organizations and universities.
