ICAR Indian Council of Agricultural Research

Established on 16th July, 1929, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research is an autonomous body under the Department of Agricultural Research and Education, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India. It is the premier body responsible for guiding, co-ordinating and managing research and education pertaining to agriculture, fisheries, animal sciences and horticulture. Under its aegis, it has 101 ICAR institutes and 71 agricultural universities and is thus the largest national agricultural systems in the world.

The Council is responsible for extensive research, extension and educational activities in the field of Indian agriculture. The ICAR is determined to harness the benefits of science in agriculture and technology with the active collaboration of farmers, entrepreneurs, industries and consumers. It has been trying to formulate advanced strategies to transform itself into an organization for enhancing agricultural growth in the country, led by innovation and sustainable growth.

The main function of the body is to plan, help, undertake, promote and coordinate education and research in agro forestry, animal husbandly, fisheries, home science and allied sciences. It also promotes consultancy services in the domains of research, training and propagation of information in various fields related to agriculture. It is also responsible for looking into the agricultural problems faced by the rural population.
