District Institute of Education and Training or DIET, has a noble aim of strengthening the in-service education at primary levels. It continuously develops itself to improve and enhance the academic tools of the elementary school teachers, adult education bodies, non formal educational bodies as well as the people in the grass-roots level, associated with our education system. The body organizes various kinds of INSET programmes in coordination with various branches and agencies at both national and state levels.
DIET was basically established to bring about a qualitative change in elementary education in general and also specifically education of the teachers. The NPE suggested the formation of DIET, a district level institution for educating the teachers, in all districts of the country. This resulted in the formation of the DIETs in the year 1988. The main function of the bodies was to look after the pre-service as well as the in-service teacher education.
The main objective of the organization was to provide resource and academic support at grass-roots level and ensure the success of the various strategies implemented. It works for the universalisation of the primary and elementary education, ensures propagation of adult education and functional literacy in the age group of 15-35.
