The Directorate General of Shipping is attached to the Ministry of Shipping, Government of India. It is responsible for dealing with all executive matters pertaining to merchant shipping. Established in September, 1949, the Directorate General of Shipping deals with matters related to Maritime Administration, development of Shipping Industry and Maritime Education and Training.

The objectives of the body are to look after the matters related to Merchant Shipping and navigation and administration of the Merchant Shipping Law, take measures to ensure that safety of the ships and lives are ensured at the sea and Indian Shipping is developed to a great extent. It also looks after the organization of international conventions related to various maritime affairs and provision of facilities for the training of the officers and ratings for the Merchant Navy.

The main function of the body is to provide an effective regulatory and supervisory control to achieve secure, safe and efficient shipping policies, protect the marine environment and look after the all round growth of the maritime university. It also provides support to the Government of India to develop and implement a comprehensive maritime development program which is going to have a positive effect on the economy of the country.
