The open and distance learning system in India is slowly becoming a very important mode for providing education to various sections of the society. The boundaries of a campus or the classroom are no more an obstruction for learning and getting educated. Distance Education Bureau is responsible for increasing the ODL institutions in the country in terms of both single-mode open universities as well as dual-mode open universities. Due to the phenomenal proliferation of the ODL institutions, at present, there are around 25% students of students who are enrolled for higher education in the country.
Distance Education Bureau or DEB is the apex body, responsible for the coordination and promotion of all open universities and the distance education system. It also looks after determining and maintaining the standards of distance education system in India. Constituted under the Indira Gandhi National Open University Act, it takes care of every initiative that is fit for the promotion of the Open Universities as well as the distance education systems.
The body looks after maintaining the standards of teaching, research and evaluation in these systems and bringing about innovation in the university level by making the best use of the latest scientific and technological advancements.
