DCI or the Dental Council of India is a statutory body, starting its operation from 12th April, 1949. It was formed under an Act of Parliament known as The Dentists Act, 1948. It is financed mainly by the grants from the Government of India, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, with other sources of income as well.
The Dental Council of India has various objectives some of which are maintenance of uniform standards of dental education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, prescribing the standard curricula for the training of dentists, dental mechanics and dental hygienists, envisaging the inspection of the dental colleges to start functioning or introducing new courses etc. It also aims at setting the minimum standards of examinations and other requirements for securing qualifications. It is also responsible for supervising all the dental institutions to ensure that they are functioning under the prescribed standards.
The Executive Committee is the main governing body of the organization, dealing with the financial, procedural and daily affairs and activities of the Council. The DCI is also the main body responsible for awarding recognition to the various dental degrees which are awarded by the various universities. It maintains uniform standards of dental education throughout the country.
