Central Institute of Indian languages or CIIL was established to coordinate the progress and development of every Indian language and bring about the essential unity between them. Established on 17th July, 1969, it is responsible for promoting inter-disciplinary research and contribute towards enrichment of various languages.
Objectives
The body is responsible for assisting and advising the various state governments and the central government in every matter pertaining to language. It aims at contributing to the development of all languages by creating the content and the corpus. Another main objective is to protect and put in the form of documents all minor, minority and tribal languages. Working towards the emotional integration of the Indians, it also promotes linguistic co-existence by teaching 15 Indian languages to learners who are new to that language.
Functions
The body conducts research in the areas of language analysis, language technology, language pedagogy and language use. All these activities are aimed at solving problems related to education, mass media, literacy, governance and integration. A very important function is to work towards the upliftment of the endangered languages and cultures. Responsible for developing materials, methods, models and human resources to be used in education, it also helps in coordinating all Indian languages.
