Central Hindi Directorate was established on 1st March, 1960, to comply with the direction stated by Article 351 of the Indian Constitution. As per this article, the Union should always strive to develop Hindi language so that it can act as the medium of expression for listening, reading, writing and speaking. It is a subordinate office under the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department of Higher Education.

Objectives
The main objective of Central Hindi Directorate or CHD is to promote Hindi, Hindi speakers and Hindi exponents. For this, they organize lecture tours of the Hindi scholars as well as workshops for the new writers. They also organize study tours of the Hindi students in the non-Hindi speaking areas besides organizing various awards and certification programmes for them.

Functions
The body functions in preparation of dictionaries and encyclopaedias, comparative Hindi Grammar and other Indian Languages and publication of popular books with help from the publishers. It is also their responsibility to coordinate and work towards developing the language of Hindi. It is also working towards standardization of the Devanagari script and preparation of Hindi Primers for people speaking other languages. The body also publishes various D-journals like Bhasha, Sahityamala and Varshiki other than organizing seminars and conferences.
