Being established in the year 1971, The Central Council of Indian Medicine is a statutory body established under the Indian Medicine Central Council Act. All the colleges under Indian Systems of Medicine follow the standards of education, syllabi and curriculum, prescribed by this council.
Objectives
- To maintain a central register of Indian Medicine and revise it from time to time.
- To establish minimum standards of education in Indian Systems of Medicine i.e. Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha and Sowa Rigpa.
- To suggest the Government of India about the withdrawal and inclusion of medical qualifications.
- To be the apex body responsible for maintaining the conduct, etiquette and code of ethics which are to be observed by the practitioners of the above-mentioned branches of medicine.
- To take the final decision regarding the number of seats in the graduate and post-graduate colleges.
Functions
The basic function of the Central Council is to develop uniform educational standards of registration and education of all the practitioners in the Indian System of Medicine. This practice ensures that anybody who practices in these systems are qualified to do so and will eventually observe a code of ethics in the profession they are following.
