Established in the year 1961, the Bar Council of India or BCI, is a statutory body, established under Section 4 of Advocates Act. This organization is responsible for legal education in India as well as standardizing and regulating the norms of legal practice in the country.
Objectives
The main objective of the Bar Council of India is to control and govern the working of all the subsidiary state-level bar councils. They are also responsible for laying down the standards of conduct and etiquette for the law professionals as well as the law bodies. It has the power, entitled by the Ministry of Law and Justice, Government of India, to acquire or hold a property, both immovable and movable.
Functions
The functions include safeguarding the privileges, rights and interests of the advocates, laying down the standards of etiquette and conduct for the advocates, laying down the procedure to be followed by the various disciplinary committees of each of the State Bar Council, raising the awareness about legal education and also laying down the normal standards for it.
It is also responsible for recognizing the law universities, visit and inspect their standards and ensure the maintenance of their quality and setting the curriculum.
