The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre or BARC is India’s topmost nuclear research establishment, having its headquarters in Mumbai. Founded by Homi J. Bhabha, on 3rd January, 1954, it is one of the pillars of India’s strength in nuclear research and development. The BARC training school was established to cater to the needs of manpower in the field of research and development.

Objectives
BARC is the numero uno multidisciplinary R&D centre under the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India. It caters to the basic objectives of generating knowledge and technology for production of nuclear power. It also helps in the advancement of nuclear science and implements it for the betterment of health and agriculture. Finding out better use of isotopes and developing various types of technologies in food preservation, water technology, medical application and waste management are also some of the objectives.

Functions
It engages in research and development in nuclear energy by helping people to know a lot about Non Power Applications and spin-off technologies for various kinds of benefits. Some other functions include generating nuclear power, analysis of risks, framing the design of the reactors, computerized modelling, safe disposal of various kinds of nuclear wastes and testing the fuel materials of the new reactors.
