NIFT Exam

National Institute of Fashion Technology

The NIFT Entrance Exam is conducted by the National Institute of Fashion Technology for selecting candidates to be admitted to the various courses conducted by NIFT. The exam comprises of a written test followed by a situation test. Finally, a Group Discussion/Personal Interview is conducted. There are several courses offered by NIFT and the eligibility criteria vary as per the course the candidate wants to pursue.

For the Bachelor of Design (B. Des) the eligibility criteria are:

  • Candidates belonging to the general category should not be more than 23 years old. A relaxation of 5 years is allowed for candidates belonging to the SC/ST/PWD categories.
  • The candidate should have successfully completed/appearing for the 10 + 2 examination from a recognized board/institution. Candidates who have completed/appearing for the 3-4 year diploma recognized by the AICTE or State Board of Technical Education can also take the test.

For admission into the Bachelor of Fashion Technology (B.F. Tech) course the criteria are as follows:

  • Candidates belonging to the general category should not be more than 23 years old. A relaxation of 5 years is allowed for candidates belonging to the SC/ST/PWD categories.
  • Candidates should have completed/appearing for the 10 + 2 examination from any recognized board/institute having studied Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as the subject combination OR they should have completed the 3-4 year diploma in any branch of Engineering recognized by AICTE or State Board of Technical Education.

For the Master of Design (M. Des) or the Master of Fashion Management (MFM) courses the criteria are as follows:

  • There is no age limit for the PG programs.
  • Bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognized university/board or an Undergraduate Diploma of 3 years duration from NIFT/NID

The criteria for the Master of Fashion Technology the criteria are as follows.

  • There is no age limit.
  • Candidate should have completed B.F. Tech from NIFT or a BE/B. Tech from a recognized university/Institution.

NIFT also reserves a certain number of seats for students of some categories. The reservation criteria are as follows:

  • 15% seats are reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates.
  • 7.5% seats are reserved for Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates.
  • 27% seats are reserved for the candidates belonging to the Other Backward Classes – Non-Creamy Layer (OBC-NCL)
  • 5% seats are reserved for candidates belonging to the Persons with Disability (PWD) group across all categories with more than 40% disability.
  • 15% seats are reserved for candidates belonging to the categories: Foreign Nationals/SAARC/NRI
  • 20% seats are reserved for the state domicile candidates.

The exam attempts to gauge the candidate’s knowledge, aptitude and skills in the context of the course for which they have applied. The written test comprises of two parts viz the Creative Ability Test (CAT) and the General Ability Test (GAT). The CAT assesses the candidate’s intuitive ability and design skills. The GAT assesses the candidate’s knowledge of current and general happenings. It also tries to test the candidate’s quantitative, analytic and communicative skills. The Situation Test assesses the candidate’s ability to handle material in the context of a given situation. The NIFT is one of the most popular institutions in the country churning out some top-notch professionals in the field of fashion technology.
