 COMMON ENTRANCE EXAMINATION FOR DESIGN

CEED or the Common Entrance Exam for Desig n is an exam conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay on behalf of the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Department of Education, Government of India. This examination aims at selecting candidates for admission to the Master of Design program at several institutes viz IISc Bangalore, IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Kanpur, IITDM Jabalpur and also for PhD programs in some institutions. Qualifying in CEED alone does not guarantee admission. In addition to CEED the candidates must also qualify in certain tests and fulfil certain criteria specific to the institutions. In addition, the candidate must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Architecture/Design/ Interior Design to appear in CEED. CEED tests the candidates’ aptitude for design, which involves several areas like visual perception, drawing skills, creativity etc.

Candidates who have passed a Graduate Level Degree/Diploma/Post Graduate Degree Program of 4 years or 3 + 2 after (10 + 2) can appear in this exam. Candidates appearing in the final exam of these programs can also apply. Candidates who have passed GD Arts Diploma (10 + 5) can also apply. There is no age limit for the M.Des and PhD programs offered by the colleges participating in CEED. Any number of attempts are allowed in CEED. The CEED comprises of two parts viz Part A and Part B. Only those candidates who clear Part A are eligible to appear in Part B. The duration of Part A is 60 minutes. The duration of Part B is 120 minutes. Part B begins only after Part A has ended.

Part A is an online, objective type test. The test comprises of three sections. Section I is for 30 marks and contains 10 Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions. Section II is for 20 marks and contains 10 Multiple Select Questions. Section III is for 50 marks containing 25 Multiple Choice Questions. Part B contains 8 questions. The questions for Part B are displayed on the computer screen, but the candidate has to answer the questions on the sheets provided.

The syllabus for Part A includes Analytical and Logical Reasoning, Environmental and Social Awareness, Observation and Design Sensitivity, Language and Creativity and several other areas. The syllabus for Part B includes drawing skills. These include the ability to draw different shapes, symbols, products etc. Creativity, communication skills and analytical & problem-solving skills are also thoroughly tested. The CEED is a very coveted examination for people interested in pursuing a career in visual design. There are several books available for preparation which aspirants can make use of. Early and thorough preparation is a must.
