The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has reportedly advised city schools not to encourage students to take the exams for the 2010-11 session.

A student has the choice of deciding if or not s/he will write the exam. He or she will otherwise be graded. They will be assessed on all-round performance through the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation, or CCE, which focuses on creative and soft skills — apart from pure academics.

The advisory gains significance considering most CBSE schools in the city run till Class X.

Even the Kendriya Vidyalayas have been asked to conduct Class X assessments at the school level. “For schools
that run till Class XII, the examination process for Class X will be totally internal in 2011,” said an official with the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan.

“None of the students in my school will appear in the board examination. For those willing to take the exams, I will try and convince them to go in for school-based assessments,” said Rita Chaterjee, principal, Apeejay School.
