IISc Admissions

Beginning academic year 2011, the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, will admit candidates to its new Bachelors in Science course on the basis of their IIT-JEE scores. The 101-year-old IISc is starting the four-year undergraduate programme in the coming year and will select 120 students from four entrance exams apart from the IIT-JEE. According to the faculty at IISc, the programme will be rooted in engineering, but will have touches of social sciences. After a strong grounding in sciences and mathematics, the students will be allowed to pick a specialization in their fourth semester.

‘‘A specialization is designed to cater to the vocational interest of a student,’’ said the institute’s website. The course will end with the students working on a research project for the last two semesters. Apart from the IISc, all the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research as well as the Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University will choose its students on the basis of IIT-JEE scores. TNN
