It is always difficult to know just how far you should go. If your experiences of studying were unpleasant or limited it can make it even harder to know what is reasonable encouragement and help. Some parents are terrified of pushing too hard. Other parents feel it is their responsibility to insist that schoolwork is done to a high standard. Your children's teachers can tell you what standard of work is considered excellent, above average and below average. This will make it easier for you to know what your children should be aiming for.
