CBSE Improvement Exam

Duration
The exam will last for 3 hours

Every year lacs of students appear for the 10th and 12th board exams conducted by the CBSE or the Central Board Of Secondary Examination. These students have dreams of a wonderful career ahead of them. Those appearing in the 10th standard board exams are keen to score the requisite marks necessary to get admitted into the stream of their choice in 10+1. On the other hand the students appearing for the 12th standard board exams are striving to score good marks and secure admissions in good colleges of their choice.

Sometimes this dream scenario does not work out as expected. In spite of putting in their best efforts, for some unexpected reason the marks obtained are below par. A student who expects to score 90% might end up with 85% and this has a jarring effect on the student’s choices of career options. The shortfall of a few marks might stunt the career of a brilliant student. He/she might lose out in the race for admission to that coveted college where the student has always dreamt of studying. If this happens in the 10th standard board exam then a student may not be able to get admission to the appropriate stream in 10+1.

It is just in order to compensate for such unfortunate cases, the CBSE has made the provision for students to appear in the CBSE Improvement exam. I am writing this article as a comprehensive and exhaustive guide to the improvement exam.

Basic Facts about CBSE Improvement Exam:

  • The CBSE improvement exam is for students who have passed the board exam in the concerned subject and are keen on improving their score. Please note that students who have failed the subject in the board exams are not eligible to write the improvement exam.
  • The CBSE improvement exam can be taken in one or more subjects.
  • The improvement examination is usually conducted the following year.
  • Students who have appeared in the previous two years board exams can appear in the improvement exam. For example candidates who have cleared the board exam in 12th board in 2017 or 2018 can appear for the 12th CBSE improvement exam conducted in 2019.
  • The candidate must have passed his/her 10th/12th examination through CBSE.

Additional Subject

I am including this item here in order to avoid confusion between an additional subject and an improvement exam. Candidates appearing for the 10th and 12th board exams can also appear for examination in additional subjects within a period of 6 years of appearing for the board exam. This is different from the improvement exam for which a candidate appears in order to improve his marks.

Change of Exam Center

A candidate appearing for the Improvement of Performance Examination for the Senior/Secondary examination conducted by the CBSE has to appear from a Centre in the same Region from where he/she had appeared at the main examination. However, in case of transfer of the parent from one place to another, a change of centre is allowed subject to fulfilment of the following conditions:

  • The parent produces valid documentary evidence of his/her transfer from one place to another;
  • Request for change of Examination centre is received one week before the date of commencement of the examination of the year; and
  • Change of Examination centre is considered only subject to availability of question papers at the requested place of centre.
